Esme, a playful and nosy Yellow-Shouldered Amazon, went hard all the time. Her favorite thing to do was to play, and played she did, so much so that she would exhaust herself and fall asleep in her owner's arms every night. Over the last few weeks, Esme had noticed things changing in their quaint little home in Mericourt. Boxes were filling up, paintings were coming off the walls, and breakables were being wrapped carefully with paper. She was confused, but since her owner didn't seem too bothered, neither was Esme. One day, while she was joyfully playing with her many toys, her owner gave her a treat. This was an unusually sweet treat, but it was tasty, and she soon started to feel sleepy. She didn't think much of it. She was often tired after a day of playing. The next morning, she awoke in a different place. She was shocked! This was not her home in Mericourt! She didn't know what to think. All the boxes that were just at her old home were now in this new place, but this wasn't her house at all! And where was her owner? She could see a faint image of a triangular tower out the strange, new window next to her cage. She pushed on her cage's door, and it flew open. At the window, she pushed her beak against it to get a closer look of the interesting shape, and it too flew open. Soon she was spilling out onto a new street, and she didn't know where to go. --- The artwork depicted and named “The Lost Parrots” represents a series of 20 parrots, hand-selected from the ornithological works of Francois Levaillant. Dated to the late 1700’s and early 1800’s, these black and white representations of the original illustrations are an ode to Jimmy Buffett’s “Parrothead” brand. These 20 parrots have lost their way in The City of Light, for one reason or another, and are trying to find their way back home. A celebrity in his own right, Levaillant was more than just a naturalist. He was also an author, a zoological collector, an explorer, and a noted ornithologist. Born in 1753, Levaillant collected insects, caterpillars, and animals, but he was most famous for his arrangement and study in ornithology, the branch of zoology that concerns the study of birds. Tri-lingual in Dutch, German, and French, he later applied an ordering system, that he created as a child for his collection of insects, to his collection of birds, many of which he killed himself. In his identification of each bird, or species of birds, he often used French names, some of which are used today. Between 1799 and 1808, Levaillant wrote a six-volume _Histoire Naturelle de Oiseaux d’Afrique_ that described the habits and appearance of the thousands of specimens of birds he collected and studied. Levaillant’s contributions to ornithology, specifically avifauna in South Africa, are profoundly influential. As such, many African bird names and descriptions pay homage to the most famous ornithologist of the 1700’s.
