When drum machines were invented, for many years they were considered poor imitations of real drums. It wasn’t until Kraftwerk and the proto-punk band Suicide came along, did musicians shed this type of representational thinking, and were able to see a drum machine as its own instrument. The word punk in this context is a reference to breaking away from defining things by representations of the past, and instead recognizing things for what they can actually do in the present.
