Luminora Etherealis, from Latin ‘lumin’ (light) and ‘etherealis’ (ethereal), is a bioluminescent plant 15-30 cm tall and up to 15 g. It features slender, translucent stems with vivid red and deep violet petals arranged in a semi-spiral around a glabrous style. Ovate leaves display iridescent blue-green, finely reticulated venation. Bioluminescence, emitting 450-495 nm blue-green light via luciferin-luciferase, localizes in elongated staminal filaments and inner petals, intensifying during nocturnal swaying, likely to attract pollinators. Native to tropical rainforest canopies at 15-25°C in humid shade, it belongs to the Nocturnalis Flora cluster (family Luminaceae) of 10 bioluminescent species. It relies on nocturnal moths and crepuscular insects for pollination and is rare and protected, highlighting its ecological importance.
