Illuminara Lepidothorax, from Latin ‘illuminare’ (to illuminate) and ‘lepidothorax’ (scaly thorax), is a newly identified bioluminescent butterfly in the Lumina Nocturna cluster. With a wingspan up to 15 cm, it has translucent blue-green wings featuring glowing orange bioluminescent spots and edges emitting light at 450-495 nm. The streamlined body supports rhythmic gliding flight, aided by elongated hindwing tails. Its luminescent venation likely functions in signaling and camouflage within dim tropical rainforest understories (20-30°C). Weighing 0-5 g, it is adapted to low-light environments where light emission aids communication and predator deterrence. Part of a vulnerable clade of 20 bioluminescent Lepidoptera species, this discovery enriches the understanding of lepidopteran bioluminescence and highlights the need for habitat conservation.
