Luminara Translucens, from Latin 'light-bearing' and 'translucent,' is a rare, stable species in the genus Aurelia Petalina, comprising 20 bioluminescent species. It features delicate, broadly ovate translucent petals with smooth margins and intricate vein patterns radiating from vivid orange stamens. The slender, sturdy stem supports dense floral clusters and broad, translucent veined leaves. Bioluminescence, emitting a blue-green glow (450-495 nm), arises from luciferin near petal margins and veins, enhancing nocturnal visibility. Native to tropical rainforest understory, it thrives in shaded, humid 15-25°C environments, grows 10-30 cm tall, weighs 5-25 g, and aids nocturnal pollination by moths and glow-worms, highlighting its evolutionary role within Aureliaceae.
