DEATH PUNK 248 (Die, Oppression!) A collaborative work by Nino Arteiro and CryptoChild. ***** Break the chains of oppression! Death to the chains of oppression. To be free we must break free of our chains. Everywhere we are in chains. We chain ourselves to ideas in our minds that bind us. There are chains imposed on us to restrict access to physical and intellectual property. These chains regulate the distribution of property and information. As we explore a new world, develop a new society with different frontiers and fences, we can break free of the old chains and structures that have created inequality in the old world. In our natural state: "Você nasce nu e livre! (You are born naked and free!) “Man was born free, and he is everywhere in chains” Then, society developed and became “civilized”: “The first man who, having enclosed a piece of ground, bethought himself of saying ‘This is mine’, and found people simple enough to believe him, was the real founder of civil society.” “From how many crimes, wars and murders, from how many horrors and misfortunes might not any one have saved mankind, by pulling up the stakes, or filling up the ditch, and crying to his fellows, “Beware of listening to this impostor; you are undone if you once forget that the fruits of the earth belong to us all, and the earth itself to nobody.” And in this, we exchanged our natural freedom to be subject to laws and government that are said to exist for fairness; protection and equality for all. Yet in truth these laws only benefit and enforce the property rights of some. As we are ‘forced to be free’ our individual interests in part are submitted to the general interest to maintain our society. Conflict develops as the members of society realize that laws are skewed in favor of those with more property interests and even restrict access to property that should be accessible and enjoyed by all. In The Crypto Anarchist Manifesto, Timothy C. May begins: “A specter is haunting the modern world, the specter of crypto anarchy.” He speaks of a technology ready to bring about a social and economic revolution. May speaks of being free of chains and breeching fences: “And just as a seemingly minor invention like barbed wire made possible the fencing-off of vast ranches and farms, thus altering forever the concepts of land and property rights in the frontier West, so too will the seemingly minor discovery out of an arcane branch of mathematics come to be the wire clippers which dismantle the barbed wire around intellectual property. Arise, you have nothing to lose but your barbed wire fences!” Over 20 years later there are some gains but still chains to be broken. There are still fences to overcome as access continues to be greatly confined. Centralized power continues to restrict expression and control access to information. Blockchains follow a consensus: an incentivized contract. We can interact with that framework to conduct permissionless transactions. We can use this technology and other technology to distribute property, to access information, to ensure privacy and anonymity, and also freely express. But there are further freedoms to develop while maintaining what has already been gained, so more can access and benefit from distributed and decentralized systems, avoiding the easier guided path to decentralization, and continue to break the chains of oppression. ******* References and further reading: Jean-Jacques Rousseau: The Social Contract and Discourses by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, translated with an Introduction by G.D.
