For the overwhelming emotional charge, the refined scenography, and the strong civil value (the canvas is in fact full of Risorgimento impulses, symbolising the love of the homeland and the fight against foreigners), the work is considered the manifesto of Italian romantic art; for this reason it was a great popular success, so much so that Hayez reproduced it in two other versions, with small changes between one and the other.
