A visual narrative of the story of Kandanar Kelan, one of the 400 forms of Theyyam's. It's folklore lies in the socio-cultural ethos of Kerala, a state in the south of India. The rituals and stories about 'Theyyam', which can be translated as 'the dance of gods' has been considered as one of the primitive tribal art forms which gave opportunity for equality in the society. Kandanar Kelan's story involves him being in the midst of an unexpected fire in a forest. As last resort he climbed onto a tree only to find a snake on the branch and fell into the fire and died. Luckily, the divine Wayanatu Kulavan, who set out to hunt in the same forest happened to witness this. Kulavan touched his bow on Kelan's burnt body and brought him back to life. Thus, Kandanar Kelan achieved divinity. Created with 5-7 of my best photographs.
