An extremely personal piece for me, & I feel in a way my most successful piece, as it was chosen in 2015 to be included in an exhibit in the Louvre. As a breast cancer survivor, it's a self portrait that I did when I was midway through the reconstruction process. I'd never have thought that I would bear myself like this in such a public way, but I felt really compelled to do this piece. I had multiple complications with the surgeries, eventually leading to me having skin grafts because I lost a large patch of skin. When a home nurse came to change the dressing, & removed the bandage, she said, “Oh! Look at that, it’s heart shaped, and it’s right above your heart!” Somehow with that statement, I knew everything would be ok, & I came to some peace about it. I came to think of my body & life like a “work in progress“, and so I called this piece “Life In Progress” Original is pan pastel painting, & the original winner of auction can choose to have a high quality print shipped to them.
