I photographed Lou Reed at San Francisco’s Winterland in November 1974. The following night I accompanied Reed and his entourage to SFO airport and while waiting for his flight back to New York, Reed gave an incredible performance for my camera as I snapped away. For the final shot, he approached me quietly and lowered his head, lit a cigarette, and in that moment I captured not only one of the all-time great photographs of Lou Reed, but one of the best photographs of my career.
