The volcano's name derives from the Javanese pronunciation of Brahmā, the Hindu creator God. A legend describest that a beautiful couple of princes, who could not have children, promised the God of the Volcano to sacrifice one of their future sons. The God listened to them and the and the promise was kept. The twenty-fifth son was sacrificed to Bromo.
