For the past five years I am taking photos of the Old Venetian Harbor of Chania during winter. During summer, it is crowded of tourists, it is full of spectacles, light and joy. But during winter, the Harbor shows the dark, moody side of its face. When the streets are empty, and the waves hit the concrete, the Old Harbor returns back to the locals where it once belonged... The project I have undertaken is an examination of the constant pressures of touristic development and gentrification. Old houses have been rebuilt, the value of the land has risen and the houses where locals used to live have now become boutique hotels, cafes and restaurants in an island whose economy has become totally depended on tourism. The lighthouse is a sign of the transformation of the Harbor. It used to guide ships with safety into the harbor, but now it has become a tourist attraction, signifying thus the change of the area from a place of commerce to a place of the industry of leisure.
