Star and Stone 1: Balanced Rock Arches National Park, UT April 7, 2021 Stack of 73 exposures This is the first in an ongoing series of meditations on time and the intersection of landscapes and starscapes. The series will be comprised of still images and time-lapses. Series Introduction Arches National Park, with over 2000 known natural rock arches and countless other unique stone formations, is a perfect starting point for this series. When we look at these formations, we see time-the culmination of millions of years of natural processes-at a glance. Because of the extended nature of the timeline, these rock formations appear fixed and static when in reality largely imperceptible changes are constantly under way. Likewise, when we glance at the night sky, we see a field of stars that appears static, but which is constantly in motion, again, almost imperceptibly. This image brings these two long time frames together and compresses them at-a-glance in star and stone.
