THE FORGIVEN WHITE EDITION #001 OUT OF 10 In a lot of ways art business reminds me of a bull fight. That is why so few bulls survive. Artists sacrifice themselves on the altars of eternity. Few of us expect to enjoy success. Rarely do we hope that decades later our paintings will be remembered. The audience adores torero and his cuadrilla. In the art business it is investors, curators, gallery owners and art-critics of all kinds. There are so many of them, but the artist is all by himself or herself. Their goal is to make sure I do not make it out of here alive. A good artist is a dead artist. He or she is not going to object or express their opinion. You can safely praise him or her. They are no longer dangerous. I always knew what my chances were. I recognized that stakes were high. I did not expect to win. Losing your life is the only chance that creator has for success. When you are no longer afraid of losing yourself, you enter the abyss where the line between your soul and your art is no more. That is how paintings are born – in a moment of total abandon. In that moment you reflect the Maker Himself, the One who let His life slip through His pierced hands only to pick it up again three days later. Welcome to the arena. Today’s match is going to be very special. I am not going to leave anything to chance. I do not put my home in blind luck. That is what gives me confidence. I am that rare bull that will live this place a winner and will enter eternity. I know. I can see it in the eyes of my opponent. SDG
