In Japan, certain spiders are known to possess astonishing supernatural powers. among them, Jorōgumo is the most famous of the arachnid yokai. Her name is written with kanji meaning 'Weaver Bride'. However, these characters were added to her name much later to obscure the original meaning: 'Prostitute Spider.' It is said that after centuries, the spider awakens to consciousness, assumes human form, and learns to dance and seduce, ensnaring her victims in nearly invisible threads.
