The experience of bipolar is uniquely personal. No two people have exactly the same experience: Lived experience story - "When I'm on a high, I can't say I feel euphoric, but I definitely notice I'm in a really great mood. I sing out loud, crack jokes and I'm just generally in great spirits. I have high hopes and I'm inspired by everything. I want to do stuff, some of it out of character for me. "Risky behavior" is a symptom of bipolar mania. Most people wouldn't call some of my things "risky". I'm pretty conservative overall, but I am much quicker to say, "Fuck it. I'm doing it." It might be buying stuff I shouldn't, staying up late, or going out of my normal comfort zone. (As example, I traveled alone recently and instead of staying with family, I got an Airbnb for myself. A shared one where I would be living with strangers for days. I would never do that. But at the time, it was exciting for me to step that far out of my comfort zone because it was scary. It went great & I loved it. Until the last day when I plummeted from my high, this time, due to a stressor.) Mania is great, especially when you are fresh out of a depressive spell. Unfortunately, I spend most of it just waiting for the coin to flip on me again. Sometimes I rapid cycle back & forth within a couple of days. Other times, I can go months. Right now, I've been pretty level for a good while. (Maybe my meds are all in sync? IDK.) This is my favorite place to be. But again, I have no idea how long it will last. I do see a doctor and take prescribed meds for bipolar and a couple of its cousins. If you do seek out treatment, I highly encourage you to bypass your GP and see an actual psychiatrist. You can discuss with your GP, of course. They may suggest you try an anti-depressant in case it's just anxiety. And that could be the right answer. But your mental health is nothing to play with so you need an expert. Your GP could probably deliver a baby or treat cancer, but wouldn't your prefer an OB or oncologist? Keep in mind that if you begin treatment, it can be a process and a puzzle to find the right kind. This will probably take some extra appointments. A good psychiatrist won't stamp you with a diagnosis, give you a script and see you in 6 months. In fact, my doctor wasn't ready to pin me down at first. Only when something she prescribed me sent me into a tailspin did she formally diagnose BP. My bad reaction to that script was a known symptom for someone bipolar. Initially, my follow ups were monthly. When we could go a couple months without changing anything, we pushed to 3 months. Just to elaborate, my psychiatrist is not a therapist. After the first couple, those appointments are about 15 minutes if all is well. They may need to know in general what you might be struggling with, but therapy is a whole different process. (I can only speak to my own experience, of course". Citation: https://www.reddit.com/r/ask/comments/elzdbm/serious_whats_having_bipolar_disorder_like/
