Sakubei boy Sakubei is one of the Chinese confections introduced to Japan from Tang Dynasty China during the Nara Period, and is said to be the ancestor of somen (Japanese noodles). The difference between sakubei and the Chinese pastry "Mahua" is that sakubei is made into long, thin doughs, mainly using rice flour.
