Peel is the sort of Bulldog who is stubborn in public and soft hearted in private, a proper comic boulder. Out near the drowned subway tunnels, Peel keeps a small ritual that involves a piece of stitched fabric tooth and a quiet bow. There is a corner of the fountain steps in The Yard where Peel is unofficially assumed to be in charge of nothing in particular. Peel suspects the universe rewards pups who share their snacks and ask the awkward questions.
