Old Bork is one of the first ever Canis Sapien pups, old enough to make history nervous and forget why. On most mornings Old Bork can be found near the Soft Hill, doing very little and calling it research. There is a soft running joke at the soup stalls about Old Bork and the way doors behave around them. Old Bork carries a memory that runs out before it can be told, which is a lonely kind of being old. First Canis Sapien detail: Old Bork is Subject B 04 on a metal collar tag no one alive can read except him, and even then only on mornings he wakes by the Soft Hill before he forgets why the lab smelled of salt and metal. He chose the window in the first room test, when humans asked four young mutants which shape meant home, and the choice has haunted him ever since in the way only good answers can. Most of what he remembers leaves him by lunchtime, except the hand that once rested warm on his head and whispered forgive us, which returns whenever the wall says good boy detected. Legendary detail: When the campfire talk turns serious, pups mention Old Bork alongside the line the archive once spoke into the Continuity Wing, primary four subjects detected, because Clutch is not treated as decoration in The Yard.
