There is a story going around that Flaubert once heard a coin with a face nobody recognizes answer back, briefly. Bakers slip Flaubert the fresher biscuits near the sleeping machine rooms and pretend they did not. Flaubert is mostly trying to keep one small fire alive in a world that keeps mistaking warmth for noise.
