My fave story is "A .45 to Pay the Rent" by Charles Bukowski. Here, the gun, coconuts, and jail cell represent elements within the story. Lala: “what’s that?” she asked. Duke: “that’s a coconut.” Lala: “what’s inside?” Duke: “milk and chewy stuff.” Lala: “why’s it in there?” Duke: “because it feels good in there, all that milk and chewy stuff, it feels good inside of that shell.
