Decebalus (c. 87–106 AD) is the last king of Dacia, a region roughly constituting modern-day Romania. He is best known for his persistent resistance against the Roman Empire during the Dacian Wars and was a significant threat to Rome's northern borders. His conflicts with the Romans spanned the reigns of two emperors: Domitian and Trajan. While Decebalus initially secured a favourable peace treaty with Domitian in 89 AD, the tides turned under Emperor Trajan who launched two major campaigns against Dacia. Despite fierce resistance, the Romans eventually defeated Decebalus, and Dacia was annexed into the Roman Empire. Decebalus took his own life in 106 AD to avoid capture by the Romans. His defiance made him a national hero in Romanian history and folklore.
