Charlemagne (743-814 AD) is king of the Franks and became the first Holy Roman Emperor in the year 800. He united Western Europe for the first time since the fall of the Roman Empire and spent many years on military campaigns to expand the kingdom - notably conquering Saxony; something which the Roman Emperor Augustus was unable to do 800 years earlier. Charlemagne instituted many important legal and economic reforms and expanded Christianity, but his successors lacked vision and the empire did not long outlive him.
