Belisarius (c. 500 – 565 AD) was a renowned Byzantine general who served under Emperor Justinian I. Heralded as one of the last great Roman military commanders, he played a pivotal role in Justinian's ambitious campaign to reconquer lost territories of the former Western Roman Empire. Belisarius achieved notable victories against the Vandals, Goths, and Persians, including the reclamation of pivotal cities like Carthage and Rome. Despite his military successes, he faced court intrigues and was at times out of favor with Justinian. Nonetheless, Belisarius remains emblematic of Byzantine martial prowess and the dream of a restored Roman Empire.
