Publius Helvius Pertinax (126 - 193 AD) was Roman Emperor who served only 3 months during the tumultuous Year of the Five Emperors. A former teacher and military commander, as successor to Commodus, it was hoped he would restore much needed sobriety to the office of emperor. However, Pertinax instituted too many reforms too quickly, including a series of spending cuts which led to his unpopularity and downfall at the hands of the Praetorian Guard.
