Marcus Aurelius Severus Alexander (208 - 235 AD) became the last Roman emperor of the Severan dynasty after succeeding his slain cousin Elagabalus in 222. Alexander reigned for 13 years which was the longest reign since Antoninus Pius. He was also the second-youngest emperor. His reign was peaceful and prosperous, however, numerous threats from Persia and Germany needed to be dealt with. Alexander attempted to bring peace through diplomacy and bribery, which alienated many in the army and led to his assassination and appointment of Maximinus Thrax. Alexander's death marked the beginning of the Crisis of the Third Century, a period of 50 years of civil war, foreign invasion and economic collapse. Alexander's ashes are said to be found in the "Barberini Vase", which was discovered at his mausoleum in the 16th century and is now kept in the British Museum.
