Max’s reference is the Vault cult from the Borderlands Game series Borderlands is a 2009 open-world action role-playing first-person looter shooter video game. It is the first game in the Borderlands series, developed by Gearbox Software. The game's story focuses on a group of four "Vault Hunters", who travel to the distant planet of Pandora to search for the "Vault", which is rumored to contain advanced alien technology and other priceless riches. The hunters gather clues to find the Vault while battling the savage wildlife of Pandora and the bandits and outlaws that populate the planet, ultimately banding together to prevent the Atlas Corporation and its privately-funded paramilitary forces from reaching the Vault first. Psychos are bandits who have gone insane with a freakish obsession for the Vault. Shirtless, wearing a white mask, and dressed in orange pants, these outlaws can be immediately identified by their homicidal cries, psychotic laughter, and constant desire to get into close combat. Rumors about the vault's existence to be a cache of alien technology hidden on the planet of Pandora, rumors of its existence began to spread and drew the attention of many, from small groups and individual prospectors to large-scale weapons manufacturers. The original intent of the corporations was to utilize the Vault technology for power and gain. A few select Vault Hunters are contacted by a Guardian Angel who reinforces belief in the Vault and guides them on their mission to find it. The Vault is an enigmatic place that is drenched in myth and folklore. After the Atlas corporation found a cache of alien weaponry on Promethea, legends began to emerge about vaults on other worlds. Popular myths and legends held that the Vault must contain something amazing and divine.
