Artanis’s reference is the Khala from the StarCraft fictional universe StarCraft is a 1998 military science fiction real-time strategy game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. The game spawned the StarCraft franchise and became the first game of the video game series. Set in a fictitious future timeline during the 25th century AD in a distant part of the Milky Way galaxy known as the Koprulu Sector, the game revolves around three intelligent species fighting for dominance: the Terrans are humans exiled from Earth who are now skilled at adapting to any situation; the Zerg are a race of insectoid aliens in pursuit of genetic perfection and obsessed with assimilating other races; the Protoss are a humanoid species with advanced technology and psionic abilities who are attempting to preserve their civilization and strict philosophy about their way of life from the Zerg. The Khala ("Path of Ascension") was the main religion of the Khalai Protoss. It was based on a psionic philosophy that maintained a communal psionic link between all adherents. Despite all the advantages, the Khalai were also subject to a number of restrictions: for example, they had to live with complete control of their own emotions even in the most difficult of times, as negativity was completely reflected in the Khala, weakening it. Every single Khalai felt longing and sorrow in the hour of great sorrow, and pride and courage in the moment of valor. Powerful Khala users like the Templars, those who ventured deeper into the psionic network, could draw energy to create deadly swirling storms. Adepts were usually divided by power levels, where the fifth, maximum level meant that the Khalai could create incredible destruction. Another feature of the Khala was the storage and distribution of memories: thus, an echo of the soul of each deceased Khalai was permanently preserved within it. In addition, when one warrior died, all of his fellow warriors nearby felt the full range of the slain comrade's emotions. Traditionally, the death of each Protoss was echoed in the Khalai with an endless chorus of minds melded together in harmony and pleasure. Specially trained Protoss Guardians had access to the entire body of knowledge absorbed by the Khala. Particularly valuable information was "preserved" in the Templar archives.
