The founder and leader of the recently re-built Illuminati is a mysterious figure. Although he has taken on the name of a long-dead Magister of the Bavarian Illuminati, it is strongly suspected that he is not, in fact, even human. However, by wrangling the leaders of the various (and largely ineffectual) secret societies of earth into a single, semi-cohesive council, and by placing himself at the top of the pyramid, Dr. Butterfield has amassed enormous power in a very short time. What he plans to do with that power is anyone's guess, but his recent contacts with several other planets have his underlings a bit on-edge.
