**Secret Artist #16 — A rock is** “What’s it like to be me?” Perhaps this is a thought only humans can think. Some would say it’s a blessing, others a curse. It certainly makes life a little more complex. But what if we gave this ability to the things which surround us? What would their answer be? “What’s it like to be a dog?” I imagine it could be pretty great if you have the right owner. Walking around in a world of smells. You probably don’t have to waste time thinking about the past or the future. You never go hungry and there’s someone who loves you attending to your every need. They might do really weird things you don’t understand from time to time, and they spend even longer playing with their toys than you do, but being a dog sure is something. It’s definitely not nothing. “What’s it like to be a plant?” I find it hard to imagine. Perhaps being happy is being healthy. Drinking in the sunlight and letting your flowers grow — that’s what it means! When people pluck you or insects eat you, you release chemicals to show you are sad and damaged. I can’t really get my human brain around the idea, but being a plant might well be something. It seems strange to assume it’s nothing. “What it’s it like to be a rock?”. Ok, I can tell you’re laughing at this question... You have no sensory organs, no animal or plant cells. How could it possibly be like anything to be a rock? You are just a lump of matter. But, wait, so is the human brain… Sure, it’s trillions of times more complex than a rock, but if they are both matter, where does the sense of self begin? The dog, the plant, or the rock? I mean, yeah, it’s probably nothing to be a rock, but what if…it’s not?
