**Secret Artist #23 — Vessel** The Ship of Theseus was a thought experiment about the founder of Athens’ vessel. It was proposed by contemporary philosophers who asked something along the lines of: if the Ship of Theseus steadily had all its parts replaced one-by-one over time, would it still be the same vessel? Would it still be right to refer to it as The Ship of Theseus? The fact that the human body replaces most of its cells many times throughout our lives has led people to wonder something similar about the self. To what extent can we say we are the same person as the one we were when we were born? My feeling is that we cannot say this, and that we are, in fact, not the same person. I believe the self is illusory and we are continually summoning it into being. This can be a scary thought until you realise that there is a freedom in this. If we are not anchored to who we were yesterday, then we can be someone else today, hopefully someone better. Secret Artist #23’s piece made me think of this and how many modern artists are using mixed mediums: taking sketches and photographs and digitalising them, layering them, making collages, bending them and warping them using filters, photoshop and AI. To what extent do these new works of art retain the original image? After all, a simple filter would be enough to change every single pixel in a picture. What can you see when you look at this piece? Can you see how it began? Does it matter?
